field kitchen - the indestructible beat of detroit
not about planning or films - music, instead.
If you live long enough, things change, while other things stay the same. Last night I occupied a sliver of cushion on a reclaimed church pew at a cafe too hip for the likes of me while seven people translated the universe by breathing and pressing and banging and picking. What I mean to say is, I went to see a show at Moondog Cafe in Detroit. But really, what I mean to say is that sometimes some music is like experiencing music for the first time, or waking up. I’ve spent a significant and embarrassing amount of my time on earth reading about ghosts, witches, the tarot, Alister Crowley, Buddhism, Theosophy, ect, ect. The world beyond the veil always called to me, mostly or probably because for many years the world in my present was unsafe and terrifying and sad. I haven’t picked up my tarot cards seriously in close to a decade. The people around me and my acquired presence in academic life turned me away, or I turned away, grew up, changed, ect, ect. And honestly, today the material contradictions feel more secure than grasping at the metaphysical. But…she still whispers. I heard her last night when the ensemble field kitchen pierced the veil, and we watched assuming they were musicians playing their instruments, really, they were magicians calling into being a cacophony that was textured and quite larger than the room it filled. At one point Ken Vandermark and Garret Frees made their instruments scream and shout together for an eternity, a smile followed by a grin followed by full belly laughter erupted from me, I was embarrassed until I noticed most of the room was having the same reaction - but why? Some language I comprehend but can’t translate myself had its way with my spirit and it's wild that these sounds come together like old friends.

What I’m Reading
The list is short because I’m officially in my summer era of no-more-school! I’ve also been slowly catching up on several periodicals I subscribe to, my favorite being Lux Magazine.
